Well, Dixie's done it again! As we returned from a walk over on the other side of the second hole of Pine Needles, I noticed some markings on the course and shiny grass and was afraid there were chemicals applied. When I tried to pick him up, to carry him over the wet grass, he slipped from his harness and ran jet speed, down toward the second green! (which is near the road) I called for him and he headed back toward me, but as he got nearby, he veered off and ran across the driving range as fast as his little legs could carry him! This was midday and people were hitting balls on the range, a worker had just boarded the tractor to gather all the balls on the field, and there were others having lessons on top of the hill. I just can't run after him, so I sat down in one of the practice areas which wasn't being used, and waited for him to get tired and return to me.....not feeling very confident, but needing a rest! Of course, I wasn't prepared, as usual, no food to entice him back! When he got tired of chasing back and forth and annoying the "pick-up"man, he went to the learning center to look for a drink. I tried very hard to control myself, walked slowly in his direction, and invited him to walk toward the bathroom, where there might be a drink.....and he did! I was able to loop the leash over his neck and apply the harness and take him home!
Since he pretty much kept and eye on me whilst he was running wild, I wonder if it might come to the day when he could be allowed to run over there and come back to me when he's done? Thankfully, there are no cars near the driving range, as it's down from the resort and surrounded by different holes of the golf course and resort buildings.
I am grateful, as usual, that I was able to get him safely home! We were both tired by his adventure and had a quiet afternoon!

One more time!
Evening walk turned into a golf course adventure! Dixie was rolling in the grass and got up to shake out the grass and realized his leash had come loose! Off he went, across the second fairway, across the driving range, where folks were hitting balls, and up and down and around the 18th Fairway of Pine Needles! Lucky thing this evening was that the men who were playing the 18th were willing to help and so was a very nice man, whose son was hitting range balls! This fine man's wife said, "go get a cart and help her", meaning help me to corral Dixie! What a life saver and Dixie saver. With me in the cart and a peanut butter peanut bar from another golfer, we took off trying to keep tract of the wayward dog! Up and down the 18th hole, in and out and about on Grove Rd! As we got near him on Grove Rd, I asked the man to corral him toward the resort again, as Midland Rd would be laced with heavy traffic at 5pm, and we were able to chase him toward the grass tennis courts and when he got inside, we were able to close the gates and get him leashed up again. By that time he was very thirsty, hot, and generally discombobulated! This wonderful soul who helped me and whose name is unknown to me, gave us both a ride back to our house! I will be forever grateful for his help. If not for him, I might still be out there looking for the Jack Russell with the Greyhound tendencies! It is truly amazing how fast he can run and how much territory he can cover in a very short period of time. Thank you kind Sir for helping me recapture the "running bull". (This man said he has a dog and knew how I felt!) The man with the peanut butter bar deserves many thanks also, as he interrupted his play on the 18th hole to help, also. Dixie hasn't gotten away in nearly a year and it serves to remind me that it is getting more and more difficult to contend with his errant ways! I really don't know if he would come back home on his own or not, but I really don't like to take any chances, except at 71 yrs, this old body can't chase down a JRT on foot! THANK YOU, GENTLEMEN, AND THANK YOU PINE NEEDLES FOR ALLOWING YOUR GUEST TO COME TO MY AID WITH YOUR GOLF CART!
